More than half of entrepreneurs in Rio Grande do Sul (52%) aim to expand their businesses in 2023, according to a survey carried out by Sebrae RS. Held in January, the survey heard entrepreneurs from Micro and Small Companies (MSE) and Individual Microentrepreneurs (MEI) from Rio Grande do Sul in the commerce, service, industry and agribusiness sectors.

In parallel with expansion plans, another 41% of entrepreneurs indicate that the year that begins should be one of stability in activities. “Gaucho entrepreneurship has demonstrated its resilience over the past three years, with lessons learned and course corrections that should be improved even further in 2023, a challenging season”, explains the superintendent director of Sebrae RS, André Godoy.

The dynamism of the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Rio Grande do Sul analyzed by Sebrae RS also reveals another important fact: 24% of entrepreneurs intend to open a new business in 2023. As for 67%, the plans indicate internal investment in current businesses, with the main areas of investment:

– Marketing (46%);

– New Products (41%);

– Expansion in service capacity (40%);

– Acquisition of new equipment (32%).

If 2020 and 2021 were seasons of great impact as a result of the pandemic, last year was marked by the gradual resumption of business. According to the survey, for 60% of companies, business in 2022 was better than in 2021. For 47% of respondents, revenue increased, while 30% indicated that it had not changed in the 2022/2021 comparison. “From commerce to services, from industry to agriculture, all sectors showed a rise”, comments Godoy.

Among the items that most affected business in 2022, companies pointed to high costs (33%), reduced purchasing power (21%) and lack of customers (15%), in addition to political instability (11% ).

With the improvement in activity and the growth in revenue, the indebtedness of small businesses reduced and financial sustainability also left good numbers in 2022. Three out of four companies (76%) were up to date with payments throughout the year. Two out of three companies (65%) did not use financing for their businesses.
