Nordex evaluates implementing a wind tower unit in RS

Proof of the good perspectives for the scenario of renewable energies in Rio Grande do Sul is the interest of the company Nordex in installing a plant of concrete towers used for wind generation in the State. The company, which was born in Denmark and is currently headquartered in Hamburg, Germany, already has tower factories in Brazil, Rio Grande do Norte and Bahia, and delivered more than 1,000 structures of this nature in the country, in the period ten years.
Nordex’s sales director, Federico Bianchi, explains that the initiative’s progress depends on market demand. “It is a technology that makes a lot of sense in the South, due to the logistical costs that would entail bringing the towers from the Northeast”, he argues. According to Bianchi, in principle, the idea would be a plant with a manufacturing capacity of two to four towers each week. The Nordex director estimates that an undertaking of this size would absorb an investment of between €5 million and €10 million and job creation would be around 250 to 300 jobs.
Despite Nordex’s focus being on onshore wind energy (on land), Bianchi participated this Tuesday (18) in the Wind of Change – Meeting of Investors in Green Hydrogen and Wind Power Offshore/Nearshore until this Wednesday (19), at the Hotel Laghetto Moinhos, in Porto Alegre. The term offshore is used for plants that are developed at sea and nearshore in parks implemented in lagoons.
The president of the Union of the Renewable Energy Industry of Rio Grande do Sul (Sindienergia-RS), Guilherme Sari, points out that the event contributes to bringing a business environment to Rio Grande do Sul. “The State is a strong player in the energy sector, mainly from renewable sources”, stresses the leader. In turn, the director of Operations and Sustainability at the entity, Daniela Cardeal, recalls that the regulation of offshore wind energy is already being discussed, with an opening for investors to participate in this debate. “This transition has to happen in a calm and balanced way”, she sustains.
In the case of nearshore generation, Daniela says that one of the biggest doubts is about the assignment of the use of areas that will be used for the production of this type of energy. She emphasizes that entrepreneurs need to be sure that the State will establish the model for this assignment and define the format for environmental licensing. The member of Sindienergia-RS argues that this discussion should also be held within the State Council for the Environment (Consema). The state secretary for the Environment and Infrastructure, Marjorie Kauffmann, considers that this measure is possible, as it is a space where environmental issues are technically worked on, but which has a multiple perspective.
Marjorie adds that in the first half of the year, a list of necessary studies should be launched to understand what are the weaknesses of Lagoa dos Patos in terms of possible wind generation on site. The energy adviser of the Secretariat for the Environment and Infrastructure, Eberson Silveira, adds that the potential for wind generation in the large lakes in Rio Grande do Sul (Patos, Mirim and Mangueira) is 34,000 MW (more than eight times the average demand for energy in Rio Great South). Offshore, he informs that the State has a potential for 80,000 MW.
