CHP Bolu Deputy Türker Ateş drew attention to the statements of the Minister of Treasury and Finance Mehmet Şimşek regarding VAT rates and stated that there should be no increase in VAT rates.
Ateş said in his statement: “As the government increases indirect taxes, budget deficits grow larger. “Inflation cannot be fought unless waste in public expenditures is prevented,” he said.
Claiming that indirect tax increases are not used to close budget deficits, Ateş said:
“In 2022, the state collected 754 billion lira VAT and 419 billion lira SCT. The budget deficit amounted to 140 billion lira. In 2023, while 1 trillion 453 billion lira VAT and 928 billion lira SCT were collected, due to the effect of both the exorbitant tax increases on petroleum products and the increase in VAT to 10 percent and 20 percent, the budget deficit jumped to 1 trillion 386 billion lira. While VAT collection increased by 92 percent and SCT collection by 121 percent, the budget deficit increased by 890 percent. There is something that the budget figures show us. As VAT and SCT collected in 2023 increase, budget deficits increase instead of decreasing. High collections cause irresponsible managers to spend high amounts just because resources are coming.
