66 billion income from recycling waste

Ali Rıza Öner, Chairman of Waste Management and Energy from Waste Producers Association (TAYED), pointed out that 110 million tons of construction waste will be generated in the urban transformation in Istanbul and said, “Zero Waste Project will make a significant contribution to urban transformation.” Emphasizing that there will be approximately 110 million tons of construction waste within the scope of the urban transformation project in Istanbul, Öner said, “The economic value of the construction material waste that will arise is calculated as 66 billion TL. “The construction waste from the buildings to be demolished will be brought into the economy and will be used in the recycling process,” he said.

40 PERCENT OF WASTE IS FROM CONSTRUCTION

Noting that there are a total of 7.5 million independent units in Istanbul, including 6 million residences and 1.5 million commercial areas, Öner announced that the urgent transformation of 600 thousand units is planned according to the projections of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change. Stating that the transformation of 200 thousand houses is planned in the first stage with the ‘Half of It is on Us Campaign’ carried out by the Ministry, Öner noted that the Zero Waste Project will play an important role in the work carried out to prepare Istanbul against the risk of a possible earthquake. Noting that 40 percent of the total waste produced in Turkey originates from the construction sector, Öner said that the total sales of construction materials in Turkey correspond to 12 percent of the gross domestic product, with an annual average of 500 billion TL.

RAW MATERIALS WILL BE PROVIDED FROM BUILDINGS

Öner aims to reduce the transfer of construction and demolition waste to clean landfills through controlled separation, thus protecting land use, reducing the need for primary raw materials by utilizing waste as secondary raw materials, reducing waste storage and the use of new materials, and improving wastewater on both a local and global scale. He noted that environmental protection was provided. Öner said, “For example, building windows can be dismantled in a healthy way and transformed into new products. “In this way, the need for raw materials is met from the buildings themselves,” he said.

A SPECIAL AREA FOR ASBESTOS SHOULD BE PLANNED

Stating that there is an asbestos risk in 70 percent of the buildings built before 2000, that is, 1 million 200 thousand units, which corresponds to 67 million tons of waste, TAYED Chairman Ali Rıza Öner noted that building demolition and separation processes should be carried out under the supervision of experienced experts in this field. Stating that the spread of asbestos fibers into the environment will be prevented in this manner, TAYED President Öner said, “Under expert hands, the risk of asbestos can be eliminated in a controlled manner. “The extracted asbestos material can be prevented from spreading by transporting it in specially coated packages and pouring it into areas prepared for asbestos,” he said.
