In accordance with the Highway Traffic Law, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure requires vehicles used to transport passengers and goods to wear winter tires for a certain period of the year, depending on the weather and climate conditions of the provinces. This authority can also be transferred to governorships by the Ministry.

Inspection of vehicles is carried out by the personnel authorized by the Ministry, as well as the General Directorate of Security, the Gendarmerie General Command, the units of the Ministry of Commerce at the border gates and the inspection units of the municipalities. Administrative fines are imposed on drivers who do not comply with the rules.

The obligation to wear winter tires, which started on November 25, 2023 in Istanbul this winter and on December 1, 2023 throughout Turkey, will end on Monday, April 1.

Winter tires lose their properties when used in summer

Since winter tires are specially produced to provide optimum performance at temperatures below 7 degrees, they lose this feature when used in summer.

Since tires wear more in hot weather, it causes problems such as premature wear and loss of performance. Winter tires designed for cold weather use cause a serious decrease in roadholding when used in summer, negatively affecting vehicle control and increasing fuel consumption.

Using tires that are not suitable for the season causes more carbon emissions into the environment. By using the right tires in season, environmental sustainability is also contributed.

Prices vary depending on tire sizes

Prices of summer tires in size 205/55 R16, which are the most used in Turkey, start from 1500 lira. The price of replacing 4 tires on automobiles varies depending on their size. Prices reach 500 lira for passenger cars and 1000 lira for SUVs and light commercial vehicles.

It is important to store car tires removed due to seasonal changes in the right conditions.

The prices of tire hotels, which can be easily found in many parts of Turkey and where tires can be stored for 6 months, vary between 500 and 1000 lira.
