Bankruptcy procedures increase by 58% in the first quarter

Spain registered more than 2,280 bankruptcy proceedings in the first quarter of 2024, 58% more than in the same period of the previous year, according to Informa D&B. From them, 1,850 correspond to contests, 40% above those achieved until March 2023. “At the end of the first quarter, there is a notable increase in bankruptcy proceedings compared to last year, of 58%, with bankruptcy proceedings increasing the most in number, with 532 more, and special procedures in percentage, advancing by 3,800,” said the director of Studies of the consultancy, Nathalie Gianese.

He Trade was the sector most affected by the bankruptcy proceedings. It accumulated 583 during the first three months of the year, 75% more; of them, 468 were contests. The figure includes the 366 contests that the sector registered in this first quarter.

On the contrary, companies managed to slow the pace of dissolutions. They fell 5% until March, despite the rebound – 1% – registered among construction and real estate companies, up to 2,570. The same happened with businesses, with an increase of 1%, up to 2,114.

Catalonia and Madrid, in the lead

Catalonia was the autonomy with the most contests in the first quarter of the year, 546, with the greatest increase in absolute value, 187. After it, Madrid with 280, 20% more than in the same period of 2023. The data decreases only in Aragón and the Balearic Islands, 19% in both cases, and in Melilla, which does not count any processes in these months.

For its part, Madrid is the community with the most special procedures for microbusinesses since January, 169, 48% of the total, and also leads the restructuring plans, with 17, a decrease of 32% compared to the first three months of 2023. In total, Catalonia accumulated 586 bankruptcy proceedings during the quarter, 50% more, Madrid 466, an increase of 79%, and Valencia 297, where they rose 33%.

Regarding the solutions, Madrid concentrates 24% of the total, 2,453. After it Andalusia, with 1,561, and Valencia, with 1,138. Although it leads the data, Madrid has the highest decrease in absolute value, reducing 564 compared to last year, followed by Navarra, which reduces 223, 64% less. During the first three months of the year, dissolutions also fell in Aragon, by 3%, Asturias, by 10%, Ceuta, by 37.5%, Melilla, by 27%, Valencia, by 11%, and the Balearic Islands, by 5%. , and La Rioja, 17%.
