Escrivá’s pension reform runs aground in the search for political support

The Minister for Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, José Luis Escrivá, stated this Thursday that he hopes to close the second leg of the pension reform this February while he seeks political consensus for the measures. The modifications committed to the European Commission as part of the Recovery Plan they should have been ready on December 31st and propose increases in prices and the calculation period.

Escrivá, in statements to RNE collected by Europe Presshas indicated that The negotiation is being “more complicated” this time because, at the request of the social agents, the reform is being discussed “simultaneously” both with them and with the parliamentary groups to guarantee its subsequent approval.

“We are looking for an agreement in both areas. The social agents have asked us to do it simultaneously and that makes the process a little more complicated because there are many elements of this final package”, explained the minister.

This reform raises delicate changes for company and worker. Specifically, the two major measures are the increase in the maximum contribution bases, which increases the labor costs associated with the employee’s salary, and the increase in the period observed to calculate the amount of the pension. At this table, CEOE and Cepyme are reluctant to sign these two measures and the businessmen convey a climate of disenchantment with the Government; while the unions, UGT and CCOO, press to raise the contributions more and not modify the calculation period.

From the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migrations they transferred this week to elEconomista.es that, indeed, one is looking for a breadth of political support at the request of unions. The philosophy of the reform is being presented to the political groups with the traditional support of the coalition government, since the popular opposition confirms that they have had no sign of the department headed by Escrivá.
