José Luis Malo de Molina, historic head of the research service of the Bank of Spain, dies

The former director of the Bank of Spain’s research service, José Luis Malo de Molina, died this Wednesday at the age of 73, as sources from the institution have confirmed to Europa Press.
The economist rose to the position of director of the studies service in 1992 until his resignation in 2015, when he handed over the position to the current governor of the Bank of Spain, Pablo Hernández de Cos. Also at the European Central Bank, he was a substitute member of its Governing Council since its creation in 1998, and president of its Budget Committee since 2011.
Born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1950, Malo de Molina joined the Bank of Spain in 1989 as an economist in the research service. Between 1987 and 1992 he was head of monetary and financial studies at the institution.
Doctor in Economic Sciences from the Complutense University of Madrid, among other professional merits he was also president of the Scientific Committee of the Foundation for Applied Economics Studies (FEDEA) and member of its Board of Trustees (1992) or president of the Presentation of the National Statistical Plan ( 2005-2008). He also participated in the group of experts appointed by the Spanish Government in 1987 to study the problems of unemployment in the Spanish economy.
