While the Personal Data Protection Authority (KVKK) continues its efforts to protect citizens’ personal data, today is celebrated as “Personal Data Protection Day” due to the Personal Data Protection Law coming into force on April 7, 2016.

Increasing internet usage and the fact that personal data is now requested on many websites and applications increases its importance even more.

Head of Marmara University Faculty of Communication Radio, Television and Cinema Department Prof. Dr. Ali Murat Kırık said that protecting personal data is of vital importance in the digital age.

Pointing out that citizens should be careful to protect their data, Kırık said, “Data sharing should be limited and privacy policies should be read when registering on websites or downloading applications. Up-to-date software should be used for safe internet use and caution should be taken against suspicious content. Personal data should be controlled and, when necessary, Personal Data Sharing should be limited and privacy policies should be read. “An application should be made to the Data Protection Authority. In addition, the security of the devices should be ensured, backups should be made, unnecessary accounts should be closed and current developments should be kept up to date.” said.

“Access requests of applications should be carefully examined”

Kırık pointed out that states have carried out important work in this field with legal regulations in recent years, and said that individuals should be more selective in allowing applications to protect their data in the same process.

Stating that applications requesting permission to access photos, contacts and other sensitive data exposes users to various risks, Kırık warned that access requests should be examined carefully.

Kırık also pointed out the recent increase in social engineering attacks and made the following assessment:

“Social engineering attacks are a method by which attackers persuade users to disclose personal information through deception or manipulation. To deal with these risks, users must increase their awareness, use strong passwords, use multi-factor authentication, keep their software up-to-date, use up-to-date antivirus and firewall “, should not click on suspicious emails and should not share personal information on public platforms.”

“It is necessary to be a conscious technology user”

Istanbul Aydin University Faculty of Law Lecturer Prof. Dr. Murat Volkan Dülger also stated that it is very difficult to protect personal data in this process where many transactions are digitalized.

Stating that a checkbox, which is often thought to be mandatory, may actually be an approval for marketing to people, Dülger said, “If you want your personal data not to be known by anyone, what needs to be done is actually very simple. You will live like a person in a time when there was no technology, no phone, computer, tablet or car.” “You will not use it, you will not order anything online. Unfortunately, its implementation is not as simple as the answer, in fact it is close to impossible in today’s world.” said.

Dülger pointed out that attention should be paid to every step taken in media where personal data is collected, and said that using websites with double-protected logins, creating strong passwords and choosing secure methods during payment may be some of the precautions that can be taken.

Dülger stated that it is almost impossible to ensure 100 percent security of personal data in a period where technology is so dominant, and said:

“Decreasing privacy with the development of technology has made it necessary to protect personal data. Unfortunately, legal regulations protecting the privacy of individuals are lagging behind compared to technological developments. In Turkey, this issue first came to the fore with the Personal Data Protection Law that came into force on April 7, 2016. “All companies that process data suddenly realized that they could not process this data in the way they wanted.”
