According to data from the international non-governmental organization Global Energy Monitor (GEM), there are currently approximately 2,440 coal power plants in 75 countries around the world. These power plants have a capacity of 2 million 130 thousand 119 megawatts. The annual carbon emission level of these power plants is calculated as 10 billion tons.

APPROXIMATELY 80 PERCENT IS IN ASIA

While 78.3 percent of these power plants are located in Asia, it is followed by countries in the Americas with 10.4 percent and Europe with 7.8 percent. The largest capacity on a country basis is in China with 1 million 136 thousand 731 megawatts, followed by India with 237 thousand 148 megawatts and the USA with 200 thousand 90 megawatts.

Fossil fuel use stands out as one of the biggest causes of climate change. In line with the Paris Agreement, most countries prefer to move away from coal in line with the goals of limiting air temperature to 1.5 degrees and reducing global carbon emissions.

Last year, 21,121 megawatts of coal capacity was decommissioned in 13 countries.

48 countries in the world plan to close 296 thousand 713 megawatts of coal power plants by 2040. This number corresponds to 14 percent of the power plants currently in operation. Thus, 1.4 billion tons of carbon emissions will be prevented from being released into nature in 2024-2040.

In this context, 22 thousand 915 megawatt power plants will be decommissioned this year. This number will increase to 54 thousand 410 megawatts next year. During the said period, the USA will be the country that reduced its coal capacity the most, with 104 thousand 90 megawatts. The USA, which ranks first, will be followed by South Africa with 30 thousand 507 megawatts and Germany with 24 thousand 240 megawatts.

The 10 countries that will reduce their coal-fired power plant capacity the most in 2024-2040 are as follows:

Country Total capacity reduction (megawatts)
USA 104,090
South Africa 30,507
Germany 24,240
South Korea 19,860
Australia 18,599
Poland 14,952
Taiwan 10,914
Malaysia 7,410
Italy 5,830
Chinese 5,270
