The César Manrique Foundation has welcomed the opening of a process of analysis aimed at reviewing the tourism model of the Canary Islands and consider containing tourism growth. The organization, very concerned about the destruction of the territory and a growth that has given rise to imbalances, has announced its adherence to the mobilizations that will take place next Saturday, April 20 in all the Canary Islands, except La Gomera, after La Palma and El Hierro have joined the initiative.
The groups calling for 20A continue adding support such as that of the César Manrique Foundation and organizing previous events. This Thursday a demonstration took place with a human chain included in the church of La Concepción in La Laguna and was accompanied by the beginning of a hunger strike by several activists from ‘Canarias se exhausts’.
“Responsibility and intergenerational solidarity recommend opening a time for reflection and exchange of approaches that leads to the redefinition of the current development model,” states the Foundation in its manifesto for the sustainability of Lanzarote and in which, in line with what proposed by the organizers of the 20A mobilization, “it is necessary to react and critically address the construction of new production patterns and quality of life that do not compromise natural resources or the rights of future generations,” he says.
The Association for the Conservation of Canarian Biodiversity (ACBC) also supported this Thursday the April 20 demonstration to put an end to a development model that threatens natural habitats and native biodiversity.
At the same time, “flatly” rejects any hostile action towards touristsas well as towards people of other nationalities who reside and work on the islands, since the “responsibility” for the situation that has been reached lies with the policies developed by the rulers, according to Europa Press.
