The Chamber of Commerce of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has rejected this Sunday the tourismphobia campaign “orchestrated” by minority groups and has asked public administrations to prevent these messages from proliferating “that go against 35% of the Canary Islands GDP and 40% of employment.

In a note, the Chamber rejects an episode that took place in the area of arrivals from Reina Sofía airportin the south of Tenerife and describes the events as “genuine recklessness.”

«The problem with this type of actions is that they do not stay here, they cross borders and penetrate the countries of origin. This idea of rejection, of no to the tourist, puts our economy at risk and conveys a vision of Canarian society that does not adjust to reality,” says the president of the Chamber, Santiago Sesé.

It also highlights that currently The islands have the challenge of maintaining the tourism industry within the parameters of sustainability “increasingly demanded by visitors” and that in this context messages of tourismphobia are being placed “they only serve to confuse and create rejection.”

In Sesé’s opinion, the movements against tourism are based on data and evaluations “without any type of economic foundation, given their sensationalism and populism are magnified and disseminated without measuring their consequences.”
