The Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Yaiza Castilla visits the Mahou San Miguel production center in the Canary Islands

The representative of the Canarian executive toured the brewery’s facilities in the Tenerife town of Candelaria | At the meeting, the value generated by the beverage company in the socioeconomic development of the Islands was highlighted.

The Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce of the Government of the Canary Islands, Yaiza Castilla, recently visited the Mahou San Miguel production center located in the Tenerife municipality of Candelaria. During the tour of the facilities, in which she was accompanied by Justo Artiles, Vice Minister of Industry, Commerce and Consumption, and Fernando Bustamante, General Director of the Canary Islands Business Unit, the representative of the Canarian executive was able to learn about the company’s commitment with economic development, especially focused on supporting the hotel and tourism sector, and with employment in the Islands.

The Mahou San Miguel brewery in Candelaria, where 40 people work, was launched in the year 2000, has more than 10,700 square meters and has a production capacity of up to 320,000 hectoliters per year. The Spanish company, the leading beverage company in our country, allocated close to 900,000 euros to these facilities in 2022, with the aim of ensuring their future competitiveness and sustainability.

Thanks to its activity, in 2021 Mahou San Miguel generated wealth worth 21 million euros and around 4,500 indirect jobs in the Canary Islands, where, in addition to a production center, it has a water spring. Additionally, that same year, it invested more than 4 million euros to support the Canarian hospitality sector, so important for the Canarian economy and tourism, and made purchases worth 3.5 million euros from its 91 local suppliers.

Family beverage company, 100% Spanish and leader in the beer sector in our country. It has 10 brewing centers -eight in Spain and two in the US-, four water springs and a team of close to 4,000 professionals. It produces more than 70% of the Spanish beer that is consumed outside of Spain and is present in more than 70 countries.

It has more than 130 years of history that begin with the birth of Mahou in 1890. In 2000 Mahou acquired San Miguel, in 2004 the Canarian brand Reina, in 2007 Cervezas Alhambra and in 2011 it diversified its business by incorporating Solán de Cabras. Since 2019, she is a majority partner of North American craft brewers Founders Brewing and Avery Brewing.

It has a wide portfolio of national beers, including Mahou Cinco Estrellas, San Miguel Especial and Alhambra Reserva 1925, and international beers. It has innovative products and category creators such as San Miguel 0.0, San Miguel ECO or Mahou Barrica; natural mineral water brands, such as the iconic Solán de Cabras, and has entered the cider segment with La Prohibida. It has also been a pioneer in the sector in launching its e-commerce: Tienda Mahou San Miguel.
