In 2008, the term was first brought to light by Satoshi Nakamoto, a pseudonym. The latter publishes a white paper governing the operation of digital currency. This is the beginning of the history of bitcoin. 16 years later, the identity of the creator remains unknown. Behind this lies a major issue, that of the fortune amassed over the years by the creator of Bitcoin. The father of this virtual currency could thus get his hands on 65 billion dollars, the equivalent of the 15th richest person in the world.
A real investigation was launched to determine the identity of its creator. An investigation which experienced a new twist this Thursday, March 14. The computer scientist Craig Steven Wright, who claimed his connection with bitcoin, was denied by a trial held in London. The judge in charge of the case, James Mello, stated at the end of the judgment: “I have come to the conclusion that the evidence is overwhelming, Doctor Wright is not the person who created the bitcoin system nor the author of the initial versions of the bitcoin software. »
A denial which reinforces speculation around the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto. Around ten computer scientists are now suspected of being behind the creation of Bitcoin. Back to four of them.
Craig Steven Wright
This Australian computer scientist has claimed to be Satoshi Nakamoto since 2016. The entrepreneur claims to hold the private keys of the founder of Bitcoin, necessary to unlock the millions of euros available in Satoshi Nakamoto’s account. A hypothesis which joins the findings made by two surveys carried out in 2015 by the media Wired and Gizmodo. To demonstrate its relationship with Bitcoin and recover its alleged gains, Craig Steven Wright took legal action against the Crypto Open Patent Alliance, an association which wants the elimination of patents on cryptocurrency technologies. A lost trial which calls into question his version of the facts.
Nick Szabo
The founder of smart contracts is suspected by some Internet users of being the father of Bitcoin. In question, the proximity between Bit Gold developed by the American engineer and bitcoin. A hypothesis confirmed by the investigation carried out by a group of experts from Aston University which establishes many points in common between Nick Szabo and Satoshi Nakamoto. The American cryptographer, however, refutes any connection with Bitcoin.
Hal Finney
The American developer, who died in 2014, could also hide behind the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. Finney is thus the first person to have carried out a transaction in Bitcoin in 2009. Subsequently, the computer scientist participated in the development of bitcoin by strengthening network security. Again, Finney denied being its creator.
Paul Le Roux
This South African and Australian computer scientist could be Satoshi Nakamoto. In any case, this is what American journalist Evan Ratliff says. Several growing pieces of evidence would demonstrate this link between Le Roux and the creation of bitcoin. For example, Satoshi Nakamoto’s last message would have been sent just before Paul Le Roux’s imprisonment. Another element, the assertion on December 13, 2022 by Martin Shkreli that the first transfer of the famous cryptocurrency would have taken place between Le Roux and Finney. A bundle of clues, however, inconclusive for bitcoin developers.
Other more outlandish hypotheses have also been mentioned, such as those which would like Satoshi Nakamoto to be the boss of Tesla, Elon Musk. A theory formulated in 2017 by the Medium site which was immediately swept aside by the South African billionaire.
