Lufthansa: new call for ground staff strike Thursday and Friday

The ground staff of the leading European air transport group Lufthansa is called for a new strike from Thursday to Friday in the main German airports by the Verdi union.
This union says it is dissatisfied with the state of salary negotiations. “No one can understand that this group is going to announce record annual results this week and that ground employees no longer know how to make ends meet in Germany’s most expensive cities,” said the head of negotiations for Verdi, Marvin Reschinsky, in a press release.
Last week, a fourth meeting on salary increases for some 25,000 ground employees ended without result. The next meeting should take place on March 13 or 14 but Verdi now wants it to be brought forward in order to speed up the conclusion of an agreement.
Verdi asks for a 12.5% increase
The union requests that a “significantly improved offer” be sent to it first. And demands a salary increase of 12.5%, or at least 500 euros more per month over a period of 12 months, as well as the payment of a one-off bonus of 3,000 euros to compensate for inflation. For its part, management is proposing 4% and an increase of 5.5% in February 2025.
Germany, Europe’s largest economy, has been hit by several nationwide strikes affecting air transport, railroads and public transport. Faced with high inflation, workers are demanding wage increases.
At the beginning of February, a walkout had already caused the cancellation of nearly 90% of the flights of the leading European air transport group.
