Increase in verbal attacks, beatings of drivers of bus, spitting in the face … The agents of the Transport Company of the Saint-Etienne agglomeration (Stas), whether they are bus drivers or controllers, can’t take it anymore. “In recent weeks, our network has been the scene of several unacceptable acts, ranging from physical attacks to spitting, including shootings at our vehicles,” denounces a representative of the national urban transport union CFDT of Stas.
The CFDT calls for the establishment of a transport police
His union firmly deplores the trivialization of these unacceptable behavior which compromise the safety and well-being of drivers. “This situation does not only concern our company,” he notes. It is a global problem which requires concerted action with the public authorities: Saint-Etienne Métropole, the town hall, the prefecture, the national and municipal police. » Letters were sent to these institutions.
In this missive, the CFDT proposes measures, such as the establishment of a transport police, “in accordance with the campaign promise of the current municipality », recalls the union. But also the creation of a metropolitan police in partnership with Saint-Etienne Métropole, the maintenance of the current number of mediation agents, i.e. thirty people, instead of reducing this number to seventeen and the creation of a group of assistance and protection (GAP) similar to that of the Marseille Transport Authority in collaboration with Stas.

Union representatives also alerted their management two weeks ago, by filing a social alarm. A measure which aims to begin discussions on their demands but which was unsuccessful. The CFDT is therefore calling on all employees to go on strike this Tuesday, April 2. “We will continue this movement as long as strong and lasting measures are not taken and implemented quickly,” assures the trade unionist.
As a reminder, in April 2021 Stas agents had struck for similar reasons: to say an end to insecurity and repeated attacks.
