In France, leaving a tip at the end of your dinner at a restaurant is not obligatory, as it may be the case in other countries. With the widespread use of bank cards, this practice seems to be increasingly lost. This is why the government introduced in January 2022 the exemption from social security contributions and taxes for tips received in the context of professional activity. The measure was extended until December 31, 2024, recently announced the government. Does it have its effect? On average, one table in five (19%) leaves a tip in France, indicates a study that we obtained, published Thursday by the payment solution application for restaurants Sunday.

But some regions are more generous than others, this study also reveals. The company analyzed one million bills paid in its partner restaurants between January 2 and March 31, 2024. And it is in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur that tips are most frequent, since 33% of tables leave some. Then follow Occitanie and Normandy (24%), then Auvergne-Rhône Alpes (22%). The poor performers are Pays-de-la-Loire (8%) and Centre-Val-de-Loire (6%).

€112 tip in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

But if tipping is more common in the southern regions of France or in Normandy, it is not in these places that they are the most generous. On average, in France, the tip left by the customer represents 5.7% of the bill. In Occitania, on the other hand, it only represents 4.5% of the bill, or “2.25 euros for a 50 euro note”, underlines Sunday. The other “stingiest” regions are Burgundy-Franche-Comté (5.1%), Brittany (5.3%) and Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Centre-Val-de-Loire (5.5%). .

To hope to obtain generous tips, it is better to work in the Grand Est, where the tip represents on average 6.4% of the bill. Pays-de-la-Loire (5.9%), Île-de-France, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur are average (5.8%) .

On the other hand, it is in these last three regions that Sunday has recorded the biggest tips since the start of the year. Customers in fact left a generous tip of €112 in a restaurant in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, while others left €104 in Île-de-France and €94 in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.
